May Roundup
May. 31st, 2025 08:55 pmAn exciting and busy month, looking back! Although with less to show for it than I'd like
Fics:
you shall drip rubies, precious rubies - Bellatrix/Rodolphus, rated M
Crafting::
I finished the blanket! I need to make a post dedicated to it with the few progress pictures I have. It was actually quite easy to put together in the end after all the putting off I did.
I’ve managed to get myself two new blanket projects, though, one (crocheted) for my best friends baby due in October, and another for my other cousin, who has sensory issues and thought she wouldn’t appreciate a yarn blanket, but she’s tested her sister’s and now she’d like one for her birthday in September
Read:
The Folk Tales of Scotland
Other::
I got a job! I had my interview at the start of the month and the last three weeks have been full of paperwork and training and prep. My DBS certificate came through this morning which is the final stage - they just need to verify it and I can start working. It’s part time, and client based, so it won’t be super regular, but because of the nature of it (I don’t know why I’m being vague, but I am), I can also find private clients and supplement my working hours that way.

EXCITING!!!
May. 9th, 2025 08:34 amWould love to be nonchalant and save this for my monthly roundup BUT I got a job! The interview that I mentioned in my last monthly roundup apparently went well (although I was convinced I'd not done a great job), and she offered me the role at the end of the call! I still have some admin things to do and then a couple of hours of training and then I'll be able to start working. Very exciting and very relieving to no longer be on the job hunt grind

blanket update
Apr. 29th, 2025 11:42 amApparently realising that I only had 40 days left to finish the blanket didn't scare me enough, so I've only just got back into working on it this last week. The original 60 squares are done, so *technically* I could just put it together, but I do want to make the bigger version.
I now have 20 days to do the remaining 24 squares and then work out how to bring them together.
I can generally weave 4 squares an hour, but it's hellish on my back so I've been limiting myself to 8 a day. Hopefully I can stick to that - three more days of weaving and then I can start joining them over the weekend.

oh no how did it come to this
Apr. 9th, 2025 05:55 pmI now only have 40 days to finish the blanket I promised my cousin I'd make for her 18th birthday. I was doing sooo well I started in January and got 40 squares woven.
I have 44 left to do, the original 10 for two more colours, then 4 more of each colour so I can expand it. I also have to work out how I'm going to attach the squares together, since I haven't actually reached that point in the original blanket I was making.
I can probably get a good chunk of weaving done this weekend, Ideally I can have everything woven before the end of the easter hols and then I can get to work on piecing it together.

Friday Five (#??)
Mar. 14th, 2025 01:22 pmOk so it may have been a few months since I was last online at the right time to answer the friday five and it feels like fate because the theme is pretty relevant to me right now
1. How far back can you trace your family tree?
I'm currently working on my family tree again, and the furthest I've got as of right now is my 5th great-grandparents according to ancestry. Early 19th century
2. What is the most interesting (or strange) thing you've heard about one of your relatives?
My paternal great-great grandmother was arrested 12 times and imprisoned twice for drunkenness, which was not particularly surprising given the current generations, but we were surprised that it was from my nana's side and not my grandad's
3. How do you feel about legacy names like John Henry Smith IV or naming children after other relatives?
In theory I like it and I think its very sweet. Especially middle names honouring grandparents. That being said, it's a NIGHTMARE when it comes to finding people on ancestry
4. Would you consider yourself and/or your family to be traditional?
I do think traditional can be a bit of a loaded word in some cases. But in a way, yes. generally through the lines and going on to now, it's always been nuclear families, closeness to cousins, things like that. But half of my generation of cousins (on both sides) are queer now, so I imagine families will be at least a little different going forward. But then looking back into the family tree, there are a lot of step families and half siblings, back when that wasn't very common
5. What is one tradition you have passed on to your children and/or plan to pass on to them?
I don't particularly plan on having children of my own, but if I were to it would definitely be the big-ish family get togethers. My maternal side all gets together on the last sunday before christmas eve, and even though we're all adults now we still insist on it. In fact I think it even started specifically because the music charts used to come out on a sunday so we'd all stay at my granny's house to find out the christmas number one, but now that happens on a friday instead.

February Roundup
Mar. 4th, 2025 01:29 pmDelayed this month. Not because I've been busy, though, I've continued my trend of getting not much at all done.
I did however pass a kidney stone mid-Feb, which arguably I'd count as an achievement because surviving that pain is nothing short of a miracle (IYKYK). Anyway, other than that:
Read
Love Letters: Vita and Virginia
Wrote
Literary Love Stories series on Nonsense&Lit
I've started to get some motivation for fic writing in the last couple of weeks, so hopefully I'll be able to get something written. I tentatively signed up for the Diagon Alley film fest and I have a couple of ideas for that.
Still no luck on the job hunt, though

January 2025 Roundup
Feb. 1st, 2025 12:51 pmI started the month with every intention of getting my shit together. I ended the month having another ocd relapse (milder than the last one, though). I think I'm more prone to them now I'm out of uni and not yet in work because I don't have things to properly occupy my time and thoughts.
I still haven't had any luck on the job front, but I'm hoping to hear back from a company I really like. Its only part time but it would be a start.

I didn’t get any fics written, or much in terms of fandom (I am so disappointed in myself for not doing the snowflake challenge, but I did launch a blog with my partner in crime. We talk about literature and language and pop culture stuff twice a week, and you can check it out HERE if you’re interested.

December roundup
Jan. 1st, 2025 06:24 pmHappy 2025! 2024 was not my most productive year, nor was it my most restful, but looking back, I'm proud of the things I achieved and hopefully this year I can continue to find my routine
Fics
A Recipe for Blackbones (Bellatrix/Amelia, T) - meta for HP rarepairs secret santa
the bride (Sirius/Narcissa, T) - for HP rarepairs secret santa
green (like her) (Bellatrix/Nagini, T) - moodboard for HP rarepairs secret santa
ghosts of Black (Gen - Black family, T) - fic for FTH
Other
I graduated! It was a freezing cold day, but in general it was quite fun. I don't *adore* formal situations, but this time I'd made some friends during the degree so it was nice to catch up with them
I went on holiday! Just to the seaside for a couple of days, but it was very nice to get away. We were between two seaside towns (Scarborough and Bridlington) so we spent a day at each
I DIYed some Christmas gifts - i painted some cat figurines to look like Jasper and Clover, and cross stitched a little portrait of my friend's dogs
Reading
The Scarlet Letter
A Poem for Every Day of Christmas
(on the topic of reading, I managed to beat my cousin by ONE book for our annual reading challenge)

Hello all! I hope the holidays are going as well as they can for everyone. My maternal grandparents were away this christmas so we had my paternal grandparents and their little dog for dinner this year. I'm not sure how we got on the topic but I ended up going on our ancestry family tree to confirm a family member's birth year and ended up being able to show my nana a picture of her grandad who she'd never seen on a photo (or in real life) before. He was born in 1871! a hundred years before her eldest son was born. It was such a nice moment and it made me thankful I got into ancestry over lockdown. I'd forgotten all the little things I'd managed to find. I also had her maternal grandmother's birth certificate from around the same time.
I'm going to go around to their house in the new year and go through some old photos and things to see if we can add more people to the tree or put some faces to the names. My nana is getting older now and she can get confused, so it will be nice to go through the memories together and try and preserve as much as we can.
The nerdy little historian in me really loves the ancestry hobby, especially because my grandmothers have all sorts stored away that I get to look at - on my mum's side my granny has a lot of paperwork, official documents on hundred year old paper, and on my dad's side we have a lot of bibles that were given as gifts that all ended up passed down to my nana, and books with handwritten dedications to children.

November Roundup
Dec. 2nd, 2024 01:31 pmThis month I made the mistake of taking the tram through the city, and I'm currently on my third week of having the plague. Genuinely, a cold usually lasts me 3 days max, but I've been practically bedbound for a fortnight. I even lost the hearing in my left ear for a couple of days - whatever I caught from that trip made its way through my entire respiratory system and left chaos in its wake.
Aside from that
Fics
My works for the Crucio and Cocktails Exchange were revealed!
Traitor - Bellatrix/Lily, rated T, 881 words
A Reunion - Bellatrix & Delphi, rated G, 1042 words
I also wrote two things for the HP Rarepairs Secret Santa, which I'll include in my December roundup
Other
Since I've had the plague, I haven't done a whole lot (I haven't read a single thing all month), but I did manage to buy my graduation dress. I'm also starting to work on adapting one of my essays into a journal article to try and publish that, and I've had a couple of job interviews. I'm also in the process of setting up a blog (co-owned) to make more serious posts about literature and linguistics and the process of university education, mostly for fun, but also to see where it takes us. I'll probably share a link to it when it's fully set up and ready to go.
Maybe December will prove more fruitful

October Roundup
Nov. 1st, 2024 06:05 pmAn interesting month to say the least. I don't talk about it often on here, but I have OCD which typically flares up around this time of year, and BOY DID IT. Spent a couple of days in bed and a couple of weeks trying to get myself back to normal - still not amazing, but I managed to get stuff done regardless
Fics
Funsize Candy - Ocean's 8 (gen), 200 words, rated G
Project Runway - Ocean's 8 (Debbie/Lou), 200 words, rated G
(plus two currently anonymous fics for Crucio and Cocktails exchange)
Fests
I only had the energy for a week of Spooky Saffics, so I did a week of Bellalily moodboards
I started out with good intentions for NaCraMaMo, but all I managed to complete was one Halloween costume for a Sylvanian Families baby
Reading
The Last of the Haussmans - Stephen Beresford
Jolly Foul Play - Robin Stevens
I also got my diss feedback - 72, which means I graduate with a distinction (!!!) and I've had a couple of job interviews, but nothing further than that

Friday Five (#12)
Nov. 1st, 2024 12:17 pm1. Do you celebrate or observe Halloween? How?
I decorate! cute pumpkins and my spooky women gallery (black and white images of my favourite horror film girls in diy frames). Sometimes I'll watch a spooky (not scary) film, but this year I forgot
2. What is your favorite Halloween candy?
Specifically Halloween candy I'm saying a mars bar because a full size one can be too rich for me but the half size halloween ones are the perfect size
3. Do you get trick-or-treaters on Halloween?
We used to! But now my dog is terrified of strangers at the door so we keep the lights low and people tend not to come. We do invite the small neighbours to come and get some sweeties though
4. Do you enjoy dressing up in costumes?
I prefer to dress my dog up! I even splashed out on a new costume for her this year after making her be a dinosaur for the past 4 in a row:

She quite likes this one because she wears something similar to keep her clean on walks, so she was happy to trot around the street in it yesterday until she got spooked by a black cat
5. What is your favorite Halloween memory?
Me and a group of friends got together to watch Kill Bill. the film wasn't amazing but I haven't seen most of them in almost a decade, so it's more my favourite for nostalgia reasons

Friday Five (#11)
Oct. 18th, 2024 09:26 pm1. What's a song you'd enjoy screaming along to as you drove down the highway?
I have a whole playlist for this! But anything by Whitney Houston or Pink will always get me screaming
2. What is your favorite place/type of environment to relax?
My favourite specifically is my bedroom. It’s my safe space, it’s pink and soft and cosy. But outside of that I really feel peaceful at the beach, I like to hear the waves and feel the sand and collect shells and rocks
3. What are the best kind of dreams?
Nice ones! I take medication that can cause nightmares and vivid dreams, so anything that isn’t either of those is very nice for me.
4. What do you look for in a mate?
This reminded me of Doctor Who ‘you just want to mate?’. If we mean mate as in pal I like someone with similar interests to me, who doesn’t mind the fact I am shocking with my phone. The same goes for a partner I suppose. Patience.
5. If you were a crayon color, what color would you be and why?
Baby pink! Because it’s my favourite

I handed in my dissertation! I was supposed to get my grade last thursday, but as per, they delayed it, so I'll get it this thursday
Other
I finally updated my fic masterlist on tumblr after almost a year
Inspired by small web september (although I didn't fully commit, and the archive isn't public) I've also been moving all my fandom related pictures to a notion page to save the storage on google photos so I don't have to pay for more (down from 13.5gb to 12.17gb so far)
I've applied for possibly a million jobs
Fests
I started working on my gifts for HP Rare Pairs Secret Santa exchange, 1/3 are submitted so far
Friday Five (#10)
Sep. 27th, 2024 05:53 pm1. Most everyone will recommend a book or two to read, but are there any you would tell people to avoid?
I tell anyone with a dog to avoid The Last Family in England by Matt Haig. I love the book, but its not the kind of thing I think you should read when you have a dog, for spoilery reasons. My mum wanted to take it on holiday when she was rooting through my collection and I had to say absolutely do not
2. If you take a book on vacation, are you more likely to take something you haven't read yet or an old favorite?
Always a new one! Its the best time to get reading done
3. Do you read any genres by the season? Like horror around Halloween? Cozy Mysteries in the Winter? Romance in the Summer?
I avoid by the season, if that counts. I don't read horror or mystery or murder vibes in autumn/winter - I can only read them when we have late sunsets because I get frightened by them particularly in the dark, so as long as I'm reading in the daytime and I'm safe in bed by dark I can read them (particularly annoying because I do enjoy murder mysteries)
4. If you read a lot of Fiction do you prefer an author that has a series with the same character(s), or do you prefer stand-alone stories?
At the minute I'm leaning towards stand-alone stories, but I will cycle through as much as I can by the same author until I need a break
5. Is there a book that you wish you could read again, but experience it like it was the first time?
I wish I could reread Lady Chatterley's Lover again. I read it for the first time when I was quite young, I wish I could go into it from an adult perspective

August Roundup
Sep. 2nd, 2024 06:29 pmI didn't even register that we've moved into September!
Fics
-my fic for ififitsifics has been revealed but the collection is still anonymous, so I'll either update here or tag it into September's roundup
a soldier who's returning (half her weight) - Bellatrix & Narcissa, rated M, 781 words (for Bellatrix Fest)
Fests
all the works for Bellatrix Fest have been revealed! Do check them out.
I got lost in the world of uni work so i still have a couple to read, which is terrible mod behaviour from me.
Uni
I wrote my entire dissertation! I'm currently proofreading and formatting it ready to submit (by Wednesday at the latest, ideally), but I got it all written (a couple hundred shy of 14000 words).
There's not much else I've done this month, since I've been on the dissertation pretty much all day every day. Now it's done with my days will be split between finding a job and writing fic for exchanges I've signed up to (if anyone is looking for an employee with a masters in English hmu)
